Word of the Week! Sentient Richmond Writing What do these images have in common? They represent sentient beings. I have used sentient incorrectly for years, in in my class about reading science fiction. Often in that genre of fiction, an alien life-form is either an animal or a sentient being, meaning (to me) that it acts according to reason, reflection, and logic. Of course, other stories have aliens wiping humans out and saving other species because humans so seldom employ  reason, reflection, and logic. So what do those most sentient of dictionary editors at the OED Online  say? In its oldest sense, sentient can include animals or other organisms if they are capable of feeling; having the power or function of sensation or of perception by the senses.   So for sentience, it would mean responding to stimuli not automatically, but by the senses. Plants turn to the light, after all, but as stated in an article  by Calvi, Sahi, and Trewas (2017), we cannot assume plants are non-sentient because of the bioelectric field in seedlings and in polar tissues may also act as a primary source of learning and memory. When someone thinks of a person in poverty they think of homelessness at worst, living in subsidized housing at best. They don’t consider that it is not always like that. Some live in their own places and out of all the help provided, maybe they only need to use food stamps. Danica tells how most people do not even know what â€Å"welfare† even is, they just think of lazy individuals trying to cash in taxpayer money for luxury items and drugs. They don’t know what their tax dollars go toward, how much of it, and what the programs even do. In fact, most government assisted programs seek to provide only the bare minimum amount of help that an individual or a family need to survive. Also to be noted, mo st benefit programs require recipients to work at least 30 hours a week in order to be eligible. Sometimes even between 35-50 hours a week for two parent households. What was worse was that local health officials had not been educated on the toxicity of the chemicals used at the Union Carbide plant therefore there were no emergency procedures in place to protect the people of Bhopal. Panic broke out in the city of Bhopal and the areas surrounding more then tens of thousands of people attempted to escape. More then 20,000 people required hospital symptoms including swollen eyes, frothing at the mouth and breathing difficulties. There we thousands of dead animals just covering the streets of Bhopal. The Indian government sued Union Carbide in a civil case and settled in 1989 for 470 million dollars. The Union Carbide which shut down its Bhopal plant after the disaster has yet to clean up the site completely. More then thousands of people died instantly and over 2,000 people died during the aftermath. In 1999 a voluntary group in Bhopal which believed not enough had been done to help the victims, filed a lawsuite in the United States claiming that Union Carbide violated international law and human rights. In November of 2000 Warren Anderson was charged of â€Å"Culpable homicide† for cost cutting at the plant which is alleged to have compromised safety Standards. In 2004 the Indian Supreme Court approved a compensation plan drawn up to help more the 570,000 Victims of the disaster. The welfare commission paid well over 350 million dollars. The Bhopal disaster in 1984 was one of the worst industrial accidents in history. However after 3 decades later toxic waste is still being stored on the site under poor conditions. Today the people in Bhopal still live with the consequences of the gas cloud and are still fighting for compensation. Almost 28 years after the accident, a group of cabinet ministers in New Delhi decided to sign over the disposal of the toxic waste from Bhopal to the German technicians. The old factory in Bhopal with its rusty tanks and dilapidated clusters of buildings, is like a ghost factory. People in the area of Bhopal are still dying from the toxic gas leak more then 300,000 have died from it over the years and more are expected to die as well. This was one of the deadliest Toxic gas leaks in the world I can’t believe that this happen. And what hurts the most is that it took them over 28 years to finally take care of the matter and I doubt its all just quiet yet as they are hitting the 29th year since the gas leak. Germany was nice to move in and help them out by taking this stuff and getting rid of it for them. I on the other hand think something should have been done about it many of years ago. On the 20th anniversary of the Mascara a man claim to have said that the Company Dow was going to pick up the waste and get rid of it. When the news people called to ask the man question there was no one by that name that had worked for them and that the guy was an imposter that they had no intention to pick up the waste. Under Indiana Code  § 32-7-5-12: Upon termination of a rental agreement, all of the security deposit held by the landlord shall be returned to the tenant, except for any amount applied to: (1) The payment of accrued rent; (2) The amount of damages that the landlord has or will reasonably suffer by reason of the tenants noncompliance with law or the rental agreement; and (3) The landlord is not liable until supplied by the tenant in writing with a mailing address to which to deliver the notice and amount prescribed by this subsection. The tenant is not entitled to apply a security deposit to rent. . The total of $12,000. 00 is due for the term of the lease. Tenant agrees that if rent is not paid in full on or before the 10th day of the month, Tenant will pay a late charge of $25. 0 and an additional $10. 00 per day as allowed by applicable Indiana law. Rent payments shall be made payable to George Murphy via check or cashier check, however if the check is returned due to insufficient funds there will be a $25. 00 service charge. All notices from Tenant to Landlord under this Lease and applicable Indiana law shall be delivered to P. O. Box 1234, Roderick, IN 46123. 5. CONSEQUENSES OF BREACH BY TENANT: If Tenant, by any act or omission, Tenant shall be considered in breach of this Lease. In case of such breach Landlord may deliver a written notice to the Tenant in breach specifying the acts and omissions constituting the breach and that the Lease Agreement will terminate upon a date not less than ten (10) days after receipt of the notice if the breach is not remedied within a reasonable time not in excess of ten (10) days; and the Lease Agreement shall terminate and the Tenant shall surrender possession as provided in the notice subject to the following: If the breach is remediable by repairs, the payment of XXXX damages, or otherwise, and the Tenant adequately remedies the breach prior to the date specified in the notice, the Lease Agreement shall not terminate; (b) In the absence of a showing of due care by the Tenant, if substantially the same act or omission which constituted a prior noncompliance of which notice was given recurs within six (6) months, the Landlord party may terminate the Lease Agreement upon at least ten (10) days written notice specifying the breach and the date of termination of the Lease Agreement; If the Lease Agreement is terminated, Landlord shall return all prepaid and unearned rent, and any amount of the security deposit recoverable by the Tenant, unless to be retained for liquidated damages. However, under Indiana Code  § 32-7-1-5, if the breach by the Tenant is nonpayment of rent, the Landlord shall not be required to deliver thirty (30) days written notice as provided above. In such event, the Landlord may serve Tenant with a ten (10) day written notice of termination, whereupon the Tenant must pay the unpaid rent in full or surrender possession of the premises by the expiration of the ten (10) day notice period. Furthermore, the Tenant may be terminated by a three (3) day written notice delivered by Landlord if the Tenant has committed a substantial violation of the Lease Agreement or applicable law that materially affects health and safety. Tenant expressly agrees and understands that upon Tenant or Landlord’s termination of this Lease, the entire remaining balance of unpaid rent for the remaining term of this Lease shall ACCELERATE, whereby the entire sum shall become immediately due, payable, and collectable. Landlord may hold the portion of Tenant’s security deposit remaining after reasonable cleaning and repairs as a partial offset to satisfaction of the accelerated rent. 6. UTILITIES: ) The Landlord is responsible for the Utilities of the building. b) If there is a service interruption (e. g. electricity to light the sign) the Landlord needs to repair within 72 hours or the Tenant will be entitled to a decrease on rent payment. 7. OBLIGATIONS AND DUTIES OF LANDLORD: Landlord agrees to: (a) Comply with the requirements of applicable building and housing codes materially affecting health and safety; 8. OBLIGATIONS AND DUTIES OF TENANT: Tenant agrees to: ) Keep that part of the premises that he occupies and uses as clean and as safe as the condition of the premises permits; b) Not deliberately or negligently destroy, deface, damage, impair or remove any part of the premises or knowingly permit any other person to do so; c) Conduct himself and require other persons on the premises with his consent to conduct themselves in a manner that will not disturb his neighbors peaceful enjoyment of their premises; d) Inform the Landlord of any condition of which he has actual knowledge which may cause damage to the premises; e) Not engage in any illegal activity upon the leased premises as documented by a law enforcement agency. Tenant agrees that any violation of these provisions shall be considered a breach of this Lease and will forfeit all rights to the contract. 9. CONDITION OF LEASED PREMISES: Tenant hereby acknowledges that Tenant has examined the leased premises prior to the signing of this Lease, or knowingly waived said examination. Tenant agrees not to damage the premises through any act or omission, and to be responsible for any damages sustained through the acts or omissions of Tenant. If such damages are incurred, Tenant is required to pay for any resulting repairs at the same time and in addition to the next month’s rent payment, with consequences for non-payment identical to those for non-payment of rent described herein. At the expiration or termination of he Lease, Tenant shall return the leased premises in as good condition as when taken by Tenant at the commencement of the lease, with only normal wear-and-tear expected. Tenant shall have the right to remove from the premises Tenant ’s fixtures placed thereon by Tenant at his expense, provided, however, that Tenant in effecting removal, shall restore the leased premises to as good, safe, sound, orderly and good condition as before the addition of Tenant’s fixture. Failing this, Tenant shall be obligated to pay for repairs as stated above. a) The Landlord requires the sign to be placed on the roof to be a tasteful sign with no â€Å"lurid† or â€Å"sexual† content on the sign. b) The Landlord has agreed to a tasteful representation of fun and alcohol. ) The size of the sign will be no larger than 10 X 12 in accordance with the town ordinances. d) The Tenant must show the Landlord the proposed sign at least six (6) weeks prior to signing the lease. e) The Landlord has tem (10) business days to review and approve the proposed sign. 11. BUILDING ENTRY a) Access to building is available for the Tenant from 9am – 9pm, Monday thru Friday. b) Access is restricted on Weekends and Holid ays. c) The Tenant can have access to the roof through the stairwell and freight elevator. d) If Tenant needs access other than the times specified above then the Tenant needs to receive special permission and arrangement from the Landlord. 12. NOTICE OF INJURIES: In the event of any significant injury or damage to Tenant suffered in the leased premises or in any common area, written notice of same shall be provided by Tenant to Landlord at the address designated for delivery of notices as soon as possible but not later than five (5) days of said injury or damage. Failure to provide such notice shall constitute a breach of this Lease. 14. DAMAGES: a) Both parties are required to carry insurance. b) The Landlord needs insurance coverage on his building and any damages that may occur through the installation and /or removal of the sign. 15. DESTRUCTION OF PREMISES: In the event the leased premises shall be destroyed or rendered totally untenable by fire, windstorm, or any other cause beyond the control of Landlord, then this Lease shall cease and terminate as of the date of such destruction, and the rent shall then be accounted for between Landlord and Tenant up to the time of such damage or destruction of said premises is the same as being prorated as of that date. In the event the leased premises are damaged by fire, windstorm or other cause beyond the control of Landlord so as to render the same partially untenable, but repairable within a reasonable time, then this lease shall remain in force and effect and the Landlord shall, within said reasonable time, restore said premises to substantially the condition the same were in prior to said damage, and there shall be an abatement in rent in proportion to the relationship the damaged portion of the leased premises bears to the whole of said premises. 17. GOVERNING LAW: This Lease is governed by the statutory and case law of the State of Indiana. Transient insomnia is a disturbance in sleeping patterns, which lasts for a few nights only. However to accomplish this they must kill the Guardian of the Cedar Forest, the great demon, Humbaba the Terrible. Enkidu, along with the elders of the city, have serious reservations about such an undertaking but in the end Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the terrible demon. As Gilgamesh cleans himself and his blood stained weapons, Ishtar, the goddess of love and beauty, takes notice of his beauty and offers to become his wife. Gilgamesh refuses with insults, listing all her mortal lovers and recounting the dire fates they all met with at her hands. Ishtar is enraged at the rebuff. She returns to heaven and begs her father, Anu, to let her have the Bull of Heaven to wreak vengeance on Gilgamesh and his city. Although he gets his saving, he involuntarily lowers the sales and income of the shop keeper that had sold goods and services to him. Those whose incomes fall cannot accumulate personal wealth in the way that they planned; they become, in a sense, the victims of other peoples' saving: their saving falls as the result of increase in saving by others. The shop keeper who receives less income will save less. If that shopkeeper who suffered the $5,000 decline in income keeps his spending exactly the same after his income drop as he did before then his saving must fall by $5,000. Therefore total saving in society will not increase at all, even though the one saves $5,000 more. His voluntary choice to save more forced involuntary adjustments on the shopkeeper that reduced his saving by an offsetting amount. Of course, the shopkeeper who suffered the income reduction may not absorb the entire reduction of his wealth with lower saving. He might also reduce his spending to adjust to lower income, but this action spreads the problem and somewhere down the line some other shop keeper makes up for the decline of $5000. SCOPE OF STUDY The scope of study for this dissertation is concerned about design of interlocking lightweight blocks by using lightweight material. The material using is Oil Palm Shell (OPS) and Styrofoam as lightweight aggregate. This research will cover on the performance (strength and density), design, and production a prototype of interlocking lightweight concrete blocks. BACKGROUND Interlocking lightweight blocks is one of the building walls used as barrier to control mass, energy, and particulate flow both within and across the system.. The shape of the Interlocking blocks is tongues on the top surface of the block and grooves at the bottom surface of the block. The function of tongues and grooves is to restrain horizontal movement when laying the interlocking block at the top of another without the use of mortar joints to provide better bond between units of block and make the wall strong enough to carry loads. Besides, interlocking block is a great invention for construction industry to save time and easy labour installed the wall either stacked or running bond configuration. For the cost issue, interlocking block is economical than conventional block due to no need to high-wages skilled masons and less mortar to use. Therefore the building costs are lower than for standard masonry construction. Lightweight concrete can be defined as a type of the concrete which is lighter than conventional concrete density in the range of 140 to 150ib/ft3 (2240to 2400 kg/mm3). Lightweight concrete can be categories into three types which is no-fine concrete, aerated/foamed concrete and lightweight aggregate concrete. The main specialties of lightweight concrete are its to lower density, basic strength (no load bearing wall) and thermal conduction. Its advantages of the lightweight concrete are reduced dead load of the building, speed up construction productivity and handling cost. This is research is based on the performance of the lightweight aggregate concrete. Therefore, the lightweight aggregate concerned to use is wastes and recycled material due to issue on environmental preservation and sustainability. Its state the oil palm shell as lightweight aggregate to substitute normal weight aggregate is possible and success techniques to make the lightweight concrete by mixing of the cement, sand, oil palm shell, and water. Johnson Alengaram 2010) noted for conducted further study on the using oil palm shell and found out that similar to normal weight concrete (NWC), water to cement (w/c) ratio affects the mechanical properties of palm kernel shell-aggregate concrete. Commonly, the water to be use is 0.40 to 0.60 water/cement ratio but only 0.23 of the water is required for hydration and the extra water is for full hydration and compaction of the concrete. Ahmad 2008) noted that From the point been mentioned above we have to look for a possible lightweight concrete which is less water adsorption and hence less cement content and therefore enhance its matrix characteristic. But still need to provide certain amount of training is required to ensure that the walls are properly aligned and no gaps are left. Because the technique is still considered new to worker compare to conventional block works. Besides, interlocking block is better in jointing and alignment but the joints are not entirely resistant to wind and rain penetration, therefore, plastering the interior wall surfaces is usually necessary. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY INTRODUCTION The research methodology that will conduct for my project dissertation is laboratory experiment material testing and application. The project dissertation is carried out at the Tunku Abdul Rahman College laboratory. OIL PALM SHELL CONCRTE Oil palm shell concrete is mixing of cement, sand, aggregates and water. But the aggregate to be use is oil palm shell to substitute normal weight aggregate. Based on (Abdullah 1984) was the first one to use Oil Palm Shell (OPS) as lightweight aggregate (LWA) in Malaysia and proved that complete replacement of normal weight aggregate (NWA) with Oil Palm Shell (OPS) is a possibility. The oil palm shell as lightweight concrete is possible and successfully to proven that can use for the building envelop. In Malaysia, there is an annual production of over 4 million tonnes of waste Oil Palm Shell (OPS). Therefore oil palm shell is very common material that can be easy get from everywhere, huge amount and cheaper. For this project dissertation, that will to do the comparison of strength and density between oil palm shell lightweight concrete (OPSLC) and normal weight concrete (NWC). PROCEDURE TO CAST OIL PALM SHELL CONCRTE The constituents of oil palm shell concrete to be use include Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), oil palm shell, sand and water. Usually the oil palm shell surface is still coating with some oil, therefore pre-treatment to remove the surface oil is necessary. The methods to be use include natural weathering, boiling in water, washing with detergent. After removed the oil palm shell surface oil, the selected aggregate size will be done by sieve analysis. For the recommended from researched, the size of aggregate which passing through the 12.5mm sieve and retained on the 4.75mm sieve was used. For the experiment, oil palm shell concrete mixing ratio will be proposed such as 1:1:2, 1:1:3 and 1:1:4 (cement: sand: ops aggregate). STYROFOAM CONCRETE Styrofoam concrete is mixing of cement, sand, styrofoam s and water. The Styrofoam will be use to substitute normal weight aggregate. Based on, (M. H. Ahmad 2008) noted that, he said the styrofoam is hydrophobic characteristics, non-absorbent, good insulation properties and closed cellular aggregates may have the potential to be developed as good commercial lightweight aggregates. But the problem of mixing Styrofoam concrete is water/cement ratio because of styrofoam is hydrophobic characteristics, and non-absorbent. Therefore the water cement ratio to be use is less than conventional concrete mixing method. Due to these characteristic, Styrofoam is very difficult to mix with cement and sand. Therefore, from the researched find out the additional of the adhesive material can increase the plasticiser of the concrete and solve this kind of the problem. PROCEDUCE TO CAST STYROFOAM CONCRETE The constituents of Styrofoam concrete to be use include Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Styrofoam, sand and water. The size of the Styrofoam to use is approximate 3mm to 5mm which is Styrofoam beads. Due to Styrofoam is a hydrophobic characteristic since they are no absorber of water, therefore the water/cement ratio is less than conventional concrete required. Besides, the compaction of the Styrofoam concrete for experiment cube is by using vibration machines or hand compaction. The compaction of the Styrofoam concrete cannot by using tamping rod because of the Styrofoam will damage the Styrofoam components. From the researched, the recommend water cement ratio to be for Styrofoam concrete is 400 to 500ml. DENSITY Lightweight concrete is a concrete which is light by using the lightweight materials to replace the conventional materials. Therefore, the density of the lightweight concrete is depended on the material to be use. The different type of the lightweight materials will determine the different densities. Lastly, the density of the lightweight materials is importance to the concrete because the density of the concrete will affect the strength of the concrete. Referred to the Neville (1995), commonly the density lightweight aggregate material is range between 300 to 1850 kg/m3. The calculation the density is based on weight and size of the concrete. The method and formula to determine the density of the lightweight concrete will show in the appendix 1. COMPRESSION STRENGTH Compressive strength is one if the primary properties to ensure the strength of the concrete. They are many ways to test the compressive strength of the concrete which include destructive and non destructive tests. From the project dissertation, the method to be use for the lightweight aggregate concrete is destructive test which is cube test. The reason of choosing this method is accuracy, easy and convenient due to the size of cube is small. Furthermore, it is used as the standard method of measure compressive strength for the quality control purposes (Neville, 1994). The procedure of compressive strength test will show in the appendix 2. MAKING OF PROTOTYPE-INTERLOCKING BLOCK For this stage, the oil palm shell concrete and Styrofoam concrete as the lightweight aggregate concrete to produce interlocking blocks. The type of concrete block design is hollow concrete block which is has one or more large cavities which pass through the block. The purpose of hollow concrete block is to reduce the weight of the concrete block and provide a hole at the middle for allow reinforcement steel bar pass through it.

Therefore, three mathematic courses, including Advanced Mathematics 1&2 and Linear Algebra, only earned scores about 70 to 84 in the first two semesters. However, I don’t think the low score represents my poor proficiency in mathematics. In the econometric classes, a course requires integrated understanding in advanced mathematics, linear algebra and statistics knowledge, I earned scores higher than 93. For all 20 specialized courses related to economics and finance, the weighted average score is 89, and only two of them are lower than 87. In conclusion, after one year of adaption, my grades of each semester have an upward trend, and I have showed good academic, quantitative skills in my learning experience.
